Organizational Setting

FAO Mongolia works with the vision "to be a leading, credible and responsive partner in ensuring food and nutrition security of the population" and implementing the global project Green Cities Initiative (GCI)\: flagship cities for integrated green oases and food systems. The project will have specific city activities in 4 of the following countries\: Chad, Jordan, Mongolia, Namibia, South Sudan and Tunisia.
The FAO Green Cities Initiative was launched by FAO Director General in the margins of the UN General Assembly in September 2020 with A the objective of supporting 1 000 cities by 2030 to make the needed transitions to become greener

Reporting Lines

The incumbent will work under the overall supervision of the FAO Representative in Mongolia and the direct supervision of the project LTO and AFAOR in Mongolia and in close cooperation with communication, operational, and admin staff of the FAO Mongolia.

Technical Focus

The project ““Green Cities Initiative (GCI)\: flagship cities for integrated green oases and food systems” is designed to improve the health and well-being of urban and peri-urban populations through better access to products and services provided by urban and peri-urban forests, agriculture and food systems which contribute to a green recovery, climate resilience and reducing environmental impacts, including lower GHG emissions per capita.

The project aims to (i) Build knowledge, capacities and partnerships to support the scaling up of GCI initiatives at national, regional and global levels, (ii) Pilot activities are developed to demonstrate how managing context-specific urban forestry and agroforestry solutions can contribute to people’s health and wellbeing.

Tasks and responsibilities

• Collaborate with local government authorities, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), youth and women's organizations, and potentially other United Nations (UN) agencies, such as UN Habitat
• Develop a stakeholder engagement plan to ensure active participation and cooperation from all relevant parties (UB Municipality, ADB, JAICA, UN-Habitat etc.) in the GCI activities
• Identify suitable locations within Ulaanbaatar for urban greening activities- in consultation with the UB city Governors office (Municipality)
• Engage with the Urban Development Institute and land management department of the selected district to agree upon site-specific plans,
• Work closely with local government authorities to secure tangible inputs, such as water supply arrangements and fencing, for project sites; - explore possibilities
• Ensure the selection of tree species aligns with technical expertise and guidelines provided by HQ or national experts if available;
• Organize stakeholder meetings and project kick-off events to provide information on project activities
• Prepare outreach plans in collaboration with selected districts, involving district representatives and officials.
• Organize planting events, including participation from schools and women's organizations, to raise awareness of GCI.
• Facilitate knowledge sharing and lessons learned sessions to support collaboration with diverse organizations and identify possibilities of upscaling

CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING

Minimum Requirements

• Advanced degree in the fields of land management, urban studies, land- use, forestry and agricultural economics;
• A minimum of 10 years of substantial experience, with at least 5 years of demonstrated experience in land management, forestry, and fund mobilization
• National of Mongolia.
• Working knowledge of English.

• Previous experience with an international public and/or private sector Organization would be considered as an additional asset,
• Readiness for intensive fieldwork;

• Demonstrated experience and ability to work with government agencies, state-owner enterprise and local communities
