Background:

Since 2016, the OSCE Programme Office in Dushanbe (POiD) has worked towards the promotion of women’s political and public participation by implementing the OSCE commitments to women’s public and political participation, strengthening the capacities of the host country’s seven registered political parties, and by supporting the Parliament of Tajikistan, youth, and civil society to work towards improved gender equality.  In 2017 the project established a Network of Youth for Gender Equality, which is comprised of active youth who have been active in political parties and/or civil society, and who have previously participated in various OSCE POiD capacity-building events aimed at promoting gender equality.

Since 2021, the Network has taken an active role in gender equality capacity-building activities. Youth who participate in the Network join because of their interest in gender equality. They are selected for participation through a competitive selection process or because they received the support of government agencies and/or one of the seven registered political parties to participate in the POiD’s annual summer school. As part of the Network, youth acquire knowledge and learn concrete skills, which they use to develop and implement gender equality initiatives in their own communities. Exchange visits, training of trainers (ToT), and summer schools for young women and men have helped these young people increase their capacity to promote gender equality and tackle negative gender stereotypes. To date, the informal network comprises over 50 active youth in addition to a wider group of alumni. In 2022, members of the Network conducted 30 sessions on gender equality, more than half of which were held during the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.

In Q2 and Q3 of 2024, the Office will conduct two trainings (3 days each) for 25-30 young activists from the Network of Youth for Gender Equality on gender equality, participation of women in public and political life, presentation skills, advocacy and public speaking. The Office will select the most active individuals from the Network to participate. After the trainings, trained youth will conduct awareness-raising sessions on gender equality jointly with the OSCE staff in different rural regions of Tajikistan.
