Duties and Responsibilities
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The internship is for a period of six (6) months. It is unpaid and full-time. Interns work five days per week (35-40 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned. Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions. Under the supervision of the Chief Environmental Economist, the intern will: • Attend events/meetings/seminars and provide in-depth insights about the results through writing, editing and statistical analysis • Draft and update online content for the web portal and social media networks including preparing engaging entries for social media platforms; • Provide assistance in presentations, event concept notes, flyers and infographics • Research and monitor a wide range of UN developments on Green Transition, SDGs, Triple Planetary Crisis
Qualifications/special skills
Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements: a. be enrolled in a graduate school programme in Economics, international relations, analytics or related field (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or (b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme in Economics, information technology, political science, international relations, analytics or related field (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or (c) have graduated with a university degree in Economics, information technology, political science, international relations, analytics or related field (as defined in (a) or (b) above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one year period of graduation. A certified copy of degree certificate (if you have already graduated). Must be able to work in a multicultural environment and be aware of political sensitivities. Be computer literate in standard software applications. Knowledge of the work of the United Nations and the ideals of the UN Charter. Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN language is an advantage.
