Mission and objectives

UNDP is the UN's global development network, an organization advocating for change and connecting countries to knowledge, experience and resources to help people build a better life. We are on the ground in 177 countries and territories, working with them on their own solutions to global and national development challenges. As they develop local capacity, they draw on the people of UNDP and our wide range of partners.

Context

The UNDP “STEPping up Nature Reserves Capacity – STEP4Nature” project aims at conserving Lebanon’s natural capital and strengthening the Ministry of Environment’s capacities to plan and sustainably manage protected areas and nature reserves. The project will specifically contribute to the enhancement and improvement of nature reserves in Lebanon from institutional, socio-economic and technical perspectives. The project is funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Italian Republic through the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) and implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in coordination with the Ministry of Environment of Lebanon. The initial assessment conducted across various Nature Reserves in Lebanon has identified that the majority of these reserves lack structured observation and monitoring towers. To address this issue, the project proposes the establishment of durable, low-maintenance observation towers. These tours are designed to harmoniously integrate with the natural surroundings of the Lebanese nature reserves and will be equipped with lightning protection systems. This addition is crucial for mitigating the risk of lightning-induced damage to both the reserves' infrastructure and the surrounding forest areas. The goal of this initiative is to enrich the visitor experience by offering designated observation points for enjoying scenic views and observing wildlife. Concurrently, it aims to facilitate monitoring activities for the staff of the nature reserves, all while significantly reducing the potential damages caused by lightning strikes.

Task description

The responsibilities of the Online Volunteer include: - Gathering relevant background information and data from the project, focusing on design style, dimensions, material type including branding, etc.; - Creating initial drafts based on specified requirements and engaging in discussions with the project team to align with dimension standards; - Developing the final 3D/2D AutoCAD design in accordance with the agreed-upon requirements. This volunteer opportunity provides a unique chance to connect with the STEP4Nature Project team at UNDP. The volunteer will gain insights into how architecture/interior design contributes to proposing sustainable and naturally integrated infrastructures within nature reserves.
