Organizational Context

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) is the world’s largest humanitarian organization, with a network of 191-member National Societies. The overall aim of the IFRC is “to inspire, encourage, facilitate, and promote at all times all forms of humanitarian activities by National Societies with a view to preventing and alleviating human suffering and thereby contributing to the maintenance and promotion of human dignity and peace in the world.” The IFRC works to meet the needs and improve the lives of vulnerable people before, during and after disasters, health emergencies and other crises.

 

IFRC is part of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement (Movement), together with its member National Societies and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). The work of the IFRC is guided by the following fundamental principles: humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity, and universality.

 

IFRC is led by its Secretary General, and has its Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. The Headquarters are organized into three main Divisions: (i) National Society Development and Operations Coordination; (ii) Global Relations, Humanitarian Diplomacy and Digitalization; and (iii) Management Policy, Strategy and Corporate Services.

IFRC has five regional offices in Africa, Asia Pacific, Middle East and North Africa, Europe, and the Americas. IFRC also has country cluster delegation and country delegations throughout the world. Together, the Geneva Headquarters and the field structure (regional, cluster and country) comprise the IFRC Secretariat.

The IFRC Middle East and North Africa (MENA) regional office based in Beirut, Lebanon supports 17 national societies in the region. The MENA Communications unit within the MENA regional office works with one regional plan as well as provides technical support to country/country cluster delegations.

Job Purpose

The Graphic Design Intern will assist in the development of visual materials for the IFRC's communication and branding efforts. The intern will be responsible for creating high-quality, visually appealing content and designs that effectively communicate the IFRC’s mission and messages, issues, and emergencies and ensure it is accessible to our significant Arabic-speaking audience.

This is a 6-months internship for a relevant student or recent graduate looking to gain experience in graphic design and build their portfolio in the world's largest humanitarian network.

The intern is expected to allocate around 50% of their time to products related to the regional health, disasters, climate and crises unit thematic areas.

 

The intern formally reports to the IFRC MENA head of Communications However, he/she would be expected to work most closely on a day-to-day basis with other colleagues and different unit members including colleagues from the regional technical units among others.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

The Graphic Design intern will carry out the following specific tasks:

  • Collaborate with the communication unit members to create designs that effectively communicate IFRC’s brand and messages.
  • Develop visual materials for a variety of mediums, including print, digital, and social media.
  • Creating infographics, designing layouts, and templates for presentations, reports, and other communication materials.
  • Work with the communication team to ensure consistency in design across all communication channels.

 

Job Duties and Responsibilities (continued)

  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously and deliver designs within established timelines.
  • Participate in brainstorming sessions and contribute creative ideas to projects.
  • Continuously learn and keep up to date with communication/marketing trends and techniques.

 

The intern is expected to deliver products in both Arabic and English as requested.

Education

Currently pursuing a degree in graphic design, visual communication, or a related field.

Experience

  • Proficient in design software such as Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, etc.) - Required
  • Knowledge of design principles, typography, color theory, and layout techniques. - Required
  • Ability to create high-quality, visually appealing designs that communicate complex information in a clear and concise manner. - Required
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to produce error-free designs. -Required
  • Creative thinker with a passion for design -Required
  • Knowledge of video editing and animation -Preferred 
  • Experience with a humanitarian or international organisation -Preferred 
  • Experience working within the RC/RC Movement -Preferred
