Head of People - International

Contract: Permanent, Full time. 35 hours per week

Location: The role can be based in the UK or one of the following WaterAid Country Programmes - Rwanda, Pretoria, South Africa, Nepal and Nigeria subject to right-to-work eligibility in the respective countries.

Salary and Benefits: Salaries and benefits for different countries will vary in line with the location of the successful candidate and depending on experience. See further details below:

  • UK - circa £70,000 with excellent benefits
  • Nigeria - circa NGN 25,000,000 to 30,000,000
  • Rwanda - circa RWF 70,154,000 to 85,000,000
  • South Africa - circa ZAR 1,444,000 to 1 600,000
  • Nepal - circa NPR 11,800,000 to 14,000,000

For the UK office only, Hybrid Working: A minimum of 40% of working time is spent face to face, either in the London office or as a result of an external engagement or travel for WaterAid. WaterAid is located at Canary Wharf, London and this will be your location and contract base.

About the Team:
The International People Management Team identify, lead and execute people management strategies and plans that are organisationally led and contextually relevant.

Through our analysis and understanding, we diagnose team and organisational needs and drive initiatives which enable, equip and engage all WaterAiders. We design and execute effective people frameworks and commission expertise teams as required. We empower managers and leaders to build high performance and engagement across 22 WaterAid Country Programmes, 4 Regions and a UK office.

About the Role:
The Head of People- International, enables globally dispersed functions to deliver their part of the ambitious global strategy through people plans and approaches that are business-led and relevant to context. Advising across all aspects of the People management remit, this role will support Senior Leadership teams and Leaders with organisational and people interventions that ensure WaterAid continues to be a highly engaged, healthy and inclusive place to work.

The postholder acts as a trusted advisor to the Executive Directors for International Programmes (IPD) and Global Policy & Advocacy (GPAC) and their senior management teams.

You'll also:

  • Be a trusted advisor to senior leaders and partner global senior leadership teams (SMTs).
  • Manage, develop and coach the People Business Partner, ensuring priorities and objectives are clear. Provide support, feedback and recognition to enable high performance and agile delivery across a matrixed team.
  • Diagnose and identify people related issues through a deep understanding of directorate/ team priorities. In partnership with the Regional People Leads, turn insight into appropriate people initiatives and plans, bringing in specialists across the wider People Team as required.
  • Lead and deliver annual people plans and projects that are needed to build capacity and skills, foster engagement, grow leadership impact and diversity, develop talent and put people first (safety and wellbeing).
  • Act as a point of contact for People leads across the WaterAid Federation whose staff matrix to IPD and/or GPAC, offering advice and guidance where appropriate.
  • Develop a culture of diversity, equity and empowerment, working in partnership with the Head of People in the UK, the Global Head of Diversity & Inclusion and Regional People Leads.
  • Lead in developing and creating an environment of trust, which enables people to speak up and feel safe.
  • Be a facilitator of change through creative and transformational people solutions and nurture/strengthen the required leadership behaviours and actions.
  • Lead the strategic people planning approach for global teams in partnership with the Regional People Leads/People Business Partner.
  • Support complex, cross border and high-risk employee relations challenges, safeguarding cases and security incidents.
  • Actively develop strong Federation-wide relationships with People Leads in region, country and member offices to facilitate the end-to-end support of globally dispersed staff.

About You:

  • Proven experience of successfully delivering people plans and initiatives in and across different geographical contexts whilst maintaining high staff engagement.
  • Proven senior HR generalist experience of OD, change, reward, talent management, leadership team development and engagement.
  • An ability to identify people priorities and organisational challenges across borders and translate these into relevant people plans
  • Clear and influential. Able to provide effective support and challenge to senior managers.
  • Ability to dynamically flex and adapt to different contexts and provide clarity in ambiguous situations.
  • An understanding of how to contribute to a culture of equity and inclusion and a personal commitment to supporting WaterAid in its commitment to tackling power imbalances that act as obstacles to the achievement of our mission
  • A deliverer, able to support decisions with a balance of analytics and sound judgement
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
