Org. Setting and Reporting
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. At the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, world leaders agreed on a comprehensive strategy for sustainable development. A key agreement opened for signature at Rio was the Convention on Biological Diversity. The Convention has three objectives: the conservation of biological diversity, the sustainable use of its components and the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising out of the utilization of genetic resources. The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (SCBD) is located in Montreal, Canada and is administered by UNEP. This post is located in the Secretariat of the CBD, within the Implementation Support Division, (ISD), Monitoring Review and Reporting Unit (MRR). Under the general guidance of the Director of the Implementation Support Division and the direct supervision of the Head of the MRR Unit, the incumbent will carry out the following functions:
Responsibilities
•Independently provides a full range of project management services for analyzing progress towards the Kunming- Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (referred to as the Framework by, among other things, preparing draft analysis of contributions to the Framework, based on national biodiversity strategies and action plans, preparing outlines and drafts of the report of collective progress towards the Framework, managing peer review processes, organizing relevant meetings, handling relevant correspondence, assisting with the development of terms of reference for the different contracts related to the review of progress towards the Framework, participating in the evaluation and selection of contractors. •Researches, compiles, analyzes, summarizes and presents information/data on wide range of biodiversity issues from various sources including scientific literature, reports and submissions from Parties, for use in reports related to the Framework. •Services intergovernmental meetings {Conference of the Parties (COP), Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA), Subsidiary Body on Implementation (SBI)} by assisting the chair and Secretary of the Meeting/ in supporting negotiations, including through compiling and integrating interventions by Parties into documents, preparing draft decisions and assisting with the preparation of relevant documentation before, during and after meetings. •Serves as focal point for the preparation of the global report of collective progress towards the implementation of the Framework by responding to requests for information, interacting with managing the different contractors, monitoring the development of the report, liaising with different partner organizations and units within the Secretariat. •Prepares, reviews, revises and provides feedback on pre-session and information documents for meetings of the SBSTTA, SBI and COP. •Prepares guides, brochures and other types of publications related to the Framework. •Tracks relevant SBSTTA, SBI and COP recommendations and decisions related to the global review of the Framework to ensure they are reflected in relevant documentation and programme activities as well as to monitor their implementation. •Maintains and further develops databases. •Represents the Secretariat at relevant meetings as required. •Assists with the collection and analysis of data as well as preparation of data presentations and reports for information sharing, responding to queries, knowledge management, planning and decision making. •Assists with visualizations and updating information material such as web pages or brochures. •Performs other duties assigned.

Education
Completion of secondary school education is required.
Job - Specific Qualification
Tertiary level education and training in environmental, social or political sciences, business administration, public administration, environmental management or equivalent is desirable.
Work Experience
A minimum of ten (10) years of progressively responsible experience in the field of sustainable development or environment related programs, environmental law, public administration and environmental conventions is required. The minimum years of relevant experience is reduced by two years for candidates who possess a first level University degree. Work experience with the Secretariat, a United Nations organization or MEAs is desirable. Experience of UNEP and CBD policies, activities and programmes as well as sound experience with UN rules and regulations is desirable. One (1) year or more of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in oral and written English is required. Working knowledge of a second UN language is required. Working knowledge of an additional UN language is desirable. NOTE: "fluency equals a rating of "fluent" in all four areas (read, write, speak, understand) and " Knowledge of" equals a rating of " confident" in two of the four areas.
Assessment
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include a substantive assessment which will be followed by a competency-based interview.
